The Spirit of the Glass

Witches summoned spirits so go the old wives’ tales. You’d marvel at this power. In truth, it was not the power the witches held sway over the unseen beings. It was in the prayers they offered. To use the name of the Holy Father in their rituals was their ticket to connect with the lost souls or demons masquerading as the souls of those who have departed this world. Believe it or not, but non-witches can summon these spirits - even 13 year old girls eager to find out if they could call the spirit of the glass, were able to do just that.

This is a true story; it happened to me and I was one of the three 13 year old girls who experimented with the old wives - just for fun. To start the ritual, we got a smooth glass tumbler, a candle, and spread out a Manila paper marked in progression with the 26 letters of the alphabet on the upper half of the paper. On the center were the letters YES and NO; below, we had the numbers 0 to 9.

We were ready and very thrilled but we also expected a big FLOP. How could three young girls, without any previous occult experience conjure the spirit of the glass? According to instructions we were to say specific prayers - one prayer three times, and another just once. Then we should ask, “Spirit of the glass, are you there?”

In the darkened room, we waited for the glass’s to budge. For what seemed years, there was no movement. We repeated the question and waited with bated breath; we almost jumped out of our skin when the glass slowly moved, picking up speed, and circled around the YES and NO and suddenly stopped on the word YES.

Of course being thoroughly modern Susans we eyed each other suspiciously. We stopped the ritual and made new rules, such as:

  • No verbalization of questions so nobody in the group would manipulate the glass to give the answer.
  • Only the tip of the fingernails of our forefingers would touch the glass
  • Ask questions by turns starting with me of course

The glass moved again and moved so fast we could barely hold on to it with the tips of our fingernails! Nobody was pushing the glass! Being the adventurous in the group, I asked the spirit his name and the glass spelled the name of a dead hero. I don’t know what the others asked because we already had an accord that questions would be unspoken.

But I remember the questions I asked but I vaguely remember the answers. Only one answer stuck on my mind - the name of my husband-to-be, and the sprit was accurate. At that time I didn’t know that the guy I was gonna marry one day, was just six years old at that time I ask the spirit of the glass. At 13, I was definitely not looking at six-year olds.

It appeared that the unseen spirit was having fun while we were already scared out of our wits. We stopped the game, turned on the lights, blew off the candle and burned the brown Manila paper. Never again did we fiddle with the glass.

Come to think of it, if three young inexperienced girls could summon a spirit, how about the hard core witches? Now if you have stored old wives’ tales about witches and rituals, better be careful when you try those out, because if you are not cautious, the spirts can destroy or possess you.
